Field Maintenance Tips

Our Burnaby Baseball Parks are only a few of the many ball parks that is mostly made up of grass and well maintained by the City of Burnaby which makes them great to play on and nice to look at. Here are a few tips to help keep our baseball diamonds looking at their best!

1. Use only sparing amounts of whitening (calcium carbonate) on the sandy cut-outs ONLY. Whitening is toxic to the environment and people and should NEVER use on the grass. Lining of the foul lines is done on a regular basis using a water-based and environmentally safe spray paint for this purpose

2. Do not rake & push the sandy materials in the cut-outs & mound out onto the grass. This causes voids and loss of materials.

3. Do not allow ridges or build-ups between the cut-outs and the grass to form and players may trip on them. Just rake them out by raking inwards.

4. Use only the sandy cut-out materials provided in the pits to fill voids in the cut-outs. To firm up the surface, use a dirt damper (a 6" x 6" flat long-handle tool) to pack it in. Using the rake to pack in the materials damages the rake. Do not use soil or gravel or any other materials for the cut-outs & the pitcher's mound.

5. Before and after each game, the HOME team should rake all the cut-outs, sweep out the dug-outs and remove any debris including checking the field for any feces or other objects that players can trip on before the game or practice.

6. To remove puddles in the cut-outs, first remove the water only as much as possible, away from the cut-out using a provided shovel. If the affect area is still soft and mushy, remove the mush using a bucket and shovel and put back into another area of the pit. After most of the mush is removed, take some of the top dry material in the pit and replace into the void. Use the dirt damper and pack in the material to create a firm surface . Do not just add more sandy materials as it will just make it more mushy and unplayable.

If every team takes care of their diamond before and after each game, we should have the best baseball diamonds in the Lower Mainland!

If you have any questions, issues or deficiences, please report them via email to Operations@BurnabyMinorBaseball.com or your divisional coordinator. These tips will be available on our website under FIELDS.
